Gorthol Grimshield grew up deep underground as a member of the Stonehammer clan. He was an armorsmith (of mediocre skill) for many years, resulting in above average strength and constitution. He set his romantic sites on Ilda Ironhand, the daughter of the clan chieftain, but his abysmal social skills (who’d have thought “you smell good, all considered” could be viewed as an insult?) kept him on the lowest rung of the social ladder and he had no success in his efforts to woo her. He was dejected when she was betrothed to another and decided that his only hope for success in the eyes of his clan would be to achieve fame and fortune, treasure and magic, adventuring on his own; so he began his self-exile at the age of 90. (His current modest +1 & +2 equipment and meager accumulation of riches leaves him far from this goal.)

He views his adventuring party as “kids” and initially considered himself as the only true adult in the group, as well as their protector. He felt that he should be the party leader, but has absolutely no leadership skill and is very uncomfortable in that role. This changed to some extent when Albrish joined the party. As a follower of Moradin, he views this dwarven cleric with great respect and is inclined to look to Albrish for guidance and leadership.

He decorates his shield with trophies (often body parts) from defeated foes; a long-held tradition of the Grimshields.
